Voters registration on

I just came from a radio program on ABS-CBN’s DXAB, Mabel at Your Service, to which I was invited as Namfrel – Davao chairman. I actually have not received my appointment papers yet, but I did represent Davao City during the Namfrel convention last October in Pasay City. At any rate, I was happy to have been able to voice out my concerns regarding the elections at Councilor Mabel’s show.

From 8 to 10 October 2008, delegates from all over the country converged at the Trader’s Hotel to get the ball rolling for Namfrel’s involvement in the 2010 elections. A new chairperson was officially announced, Amb. Henrietta “Tita” de Villa, who is also chair of the PPCRV. One of the most crucial discussions we had during the 3-day convention was Namfrel’s role in the event of automated elections in 2010. What would change? How would Namfrel operate then?

The momentous affair last month was also an opportune time for all the delegates to affirm their commitment to the objectives of this historical institution. Namfrel began in 1984, in response to the clamor for transparent and clean elections during the snap presidential elections.

Atty. Gay Asuncion-Enumerables, Acting Asst. Regional Election Director of Comelec – Region 11 and Compostela Valley Provincial Election Superitendent, was also a guest of the radio program hosted by Councilor Mabel (1st District, Davao City) tonight. She announced that voters registration will be open starting 2 December 2008 (Tuesday), and will be open up to 20 December of this year. It will resume on 2 January 2009, on to 15 December 2009.

I’d like to encourage everyone, especially the youth, to go out and register. Be sure you’ll be able to exercise your right to vote this May 2010. If anything, a large turnout of registrants might just rouse our politicians to the fact that we want change, and our right to suffrage will be our way of achieving this.

The Comelec now has downloadable electronic forms, which should somehow ease the registration process. Please go to the official Comelec website for more information. I know, I know — the Comelec website isn’t very interactive, and leaves a lot to be desired… but it’s a start.
