Cha-Cha on hold…for now
Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles let slip an irresponsible and highly insensitive statement yesterday when he said:
“In the end, it is still Congress that will decide the fate of the Constitution. Only senators and congressmen are empowered to initiate changes in the Charter and no amount of protest rallies can decide whether the Constitution will be amended or not.” [emphasis supplied]
Sentiments like that only prove how corrupted our government officials’ minds are. They have forgotten that they are ‘in power’ because they were put there by the people.
I do not espouse a People Power; in fact, I think another one would only serve to dilute and ridicule the original mass initiative in 1986. We do need to respect the rule of law and the proper legal processes. On the other hand, I am all for peaceful protests. That is our right as a democratic people. When political protest rallies happen, government should pay attention and not issue glib statements that undermine the people’s sovereign rights.
Gloria Arroyo’s remark the other day that there was only an unimpressive number of protesters at the Makati anti-Charter Change rally is yet another blaring example of why she no longer has the moral ascendancy to sit as president. She and her administration have become blinded by power.

yes, because when we say changes in the constitution, should be given attention by the upper and the lower house. Nograles just stated it because i know “malakas and administration ngayon” but it doesn’t mean that they could change the consti right away.
I believe that there must be a so-called signature campaign or other form, that would happen before machange ang consti. Yes, they have the power to change it and they are empowered to initiate such act, but then they should also consider that we are a democratic country. People have vital role in this scenario, and they have part of the any changes of the consti.
Thus, the constitution is for the people, and only in Nograles’ dreams na machange and constitution without the power of the people!!!!!!!
I belive, people have the right na makiala!!!!!!
and of course, if Nograles stated that “no amount of rallies and protest would decide whether the consti will be amended, well tha’s only a JOKE for me…. i don’t believe in his statement!!!!!!!
