NO to CON-ASS

The House of Representatives, in a blatantly unconstitutional move, railroaded the passing of House Resolution #1109 yesterday — the resolution to convene Congress as a Constituent Assembly for the purpose of amending the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Majority-rule congressmen insisted that this can be done by a 3/4 vote of Congress, even without the Senate, since the House of Representatives as a whole outnumber the Senate.

I don’t think “Congress” is a mathematical equation. It refers to the Lower house and the Senate in one convention. Acting alone, the Lower House was not the Congress at all. Therefore, HR1109 is a farce.

But the real contention here is: taking into account the bleak history of Philippine governmental leadership, today is not the time to meddle with our Constitution. The fear among many Filipinos of Charter Change being used as a ploy by this regime to remain in power is not baseless. And by the very presence of this fear, this overwhelming concern over the peaceful transition of power in 2010, the Arroyo administration must not at this time espouse, nor even entertain, any move that will fuel these flames of fear.

If the sitting president believes in her own press releases that the country is doing well economically, then she must realize that any destabilizing factors — and HR1109 is one — will jeopardize and stunt the supposed growth our country is reportedly experiencing.

We must have elections in 2010. There is a need for change, yes, but not in the form of government, not in what the Constitution has stood for all these years. What Filipinos need now is a change of leadership.

    dapat ilatag ang mga nais ng mga mambabatas na palitan sa konstituyon,economic agenda ang pangako nilang dapat baguhin at pag tibayin,bilang pananggalan natin sa global recession.pero diba puro lang sila pangako?

    i am not anti con-ass and the more i am not for con-ass, but don’t you all think this is just a waste of time? these bloggings and eyeballs, rallies etc. di pa rin nila tayo marinig, at kung naririnig man tayo ng mga tao dyan sa House, still they don’t give a “D”. Because kahit na dumarami na ang sumisigaw sa kalye para ibasura ang con-ass, still there are politicians who obviously will walk side by side with us shouting anti-con-ass slogans, nagbabalat-kayo lamang for their own benefits. Di man lang sila marunong mahiya. Nakakawalang gana kung iisipin, nakakaawa kung titingnan ang mga Pilipino, laging naniniwala sa mga dalang pangako ng mga pulitiko, na alam naman nating mapapako lamang iyon, at patuloy pa rin tayong magbulag-bulagan, umaasa sa mga pangako nilang PAGBABAGO. Dahil ang pagbabago ay dapat magsimula sa ating sarili. Magpapa-uto pa rin ba tayo sa mga taong niluklok natin sa gobyerno? Pilipino ay madaling makalimot at madaling magpatawad.

      All the blogging and activities resulting from that are not useless. What’s more dangerous to our situation now is apathy. But you’re right, we must be vigilant against politicians who will ride the blogging wave to promote their own ends.
